LUCKNOW: In a shocking incident of robbery and reckless driving, a petrol pump employee was dragged nearly 500 metres by a speeding car after its occupants fled without paying for fuel worth approximately Rs 4,000 in the Gosaiganj area of Lucknow in the early hours of Sunday.

The employee, identified as Satyanam, sustained serious injuries after being dragged along the road and eventually thrown off the moving vehicle.

He was initially taken to the Gosaiganj Community Health Centre (CHC) and later referred to the Trauma Centre at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), where his condition remains critical.

The incident occurred around 4.19 am at a petrol pump situated along Sultanpur Road under the Gosaiganj police station area. The entire sequence of events was captured on the petrol pump’s CCTV cameras.

According to the petrol pump management, a black car arrived at nozzle number five and its occupants asked the staff to fill the fuel tank. The vehicle was filled with petrol worth around Rs 4,000.

When employee Satyanam approached the driver for payment, the latter allegedly tried to distract him by pretending to engage in a conversation about making the payment.

Driver accelerates as employee approaches with swipe machine

According to the CCTV footage, Satyanam approached the driver’s side window carrying a card-swiping machine to collect the payment.

At around 4.21 am, as the employee extended his hand towards the car window for the transaction, the driver suddenly accelerated instead of paying.

Caught off guard, Satyanam attempted to prevent the vehicle from escaping and clung to the car’s window in an effort to stop it. However, the driver allegedly continued speeding without stopping, dragging the employee along the highway for nearly 500 metres.

The occupants eventually pushed him off the moving vehicle and fled without making the payment, leaving him severely injured on the road.

Colleagues find employee unconscious in pool of blood

Other petrol pump employees immediately rushed after the fleeing car. After covering some distance, they found Satyanam lying unconscious on the road, bleeding profusely.

His colleagues rushed him to the Gosainganj Community Health Centre for immediate medical assistance. However, considering the seriousness of his injuries, doctors referred him to the SGPGI Trauma Centre for advanced treatment.

He is currently undergoing treatment, with his condition reported to be critical.

Police scan CCTV footage to identify accused

The petrol pump manager has lodged a complaint with the Gosaiganj police against the unidentified occupants of the car.

Police said the incident was recorded by two CCTV cameras installed at the petrol pump. Investigators are examining the footage to identify the vehicle and trace those involved.

CCTV recordings from other cameras installed along Sultanpur Road and the adjoining highway are also being examined to establish the route taken by the accused after the incident.

Further investigation is underway.
