BHOPAL: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 6.642 kg of amphetamine , valued at Rs 5.32 crore in the international illicit market, and arrested a drug trafficker following an interception near Bhopal.

Acting on specific intelligence that a drug trafficker was travelling from Delhi to Bhopal by bus with a consignment of narcotics, a DRI team intercepted the bus at Sonkatch Toll Plaza in the afternoon of November 5.

A search of the passenger's light brown duffle bag led to the recovery of three silver-coloured plastic packets containing a crystalline white substance weighing 6.642 kg. Field tests confirmed that the substance was amphetamine, a synthetic psychotropic drug.

The entire consignment, estimated to be worth Rs 5.32 crore in the international illicit market, was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger was arrested under the Act.

Investigators found that the arrested man was already out on bail in another NDPS case registered by Bengaluru Police, indicating his alleged involvement in repeated drug trafficking offences.

During the search, DRI officers also recovered Rs 48,400 in cash from his luggage. The passenger reportedly admitted that the money was generated through drug trafficking. The cash was subsequently seized as suspected proceeds of crime.

Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the consignment, identify its intended recipients and uncover the wider drug trafficking network. The DRI said the operation was part of its efforts to support the Centre's Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
