Approval has been granted to establish Ladakh’s first government medical college in Leh, with operations set to commence from the 2027-28 academic year. This government approval also paves the way for the phased recruitment of personnel for 103 sanctioned regular posts, in line with academic requirements.

There is good news for those aspiring to pursue medical studies in Ladakh. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved the establishment of Ladakh’s first government medical college in Leh, effective from the 2027-28 academic year. This approval facilitates the phased recruitment of staff for 103 sanctioned regular positions, based on academic needs. According to a spokesperson for the Government of India, this development is a significant step toward improving access to quality medical education within the Union Territory and fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh. It will create more opportunities for students wishing to study at the government medical college in Leh, strengthen clinical training facilities, and contribute to the long-term development of healthcare services in the region.

Regarding the establishment of the medical college, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had written to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda, on July 13, 2026. Under existing regulations, the recruitment of faculty and support staff could only commence once 80 percent of the infrastructure was in place. Consequently, the Lieutenant Governor requested a one-time exemption from this condition. The objective of this exemption was to ensure that initial recruitment could begin in a timely manner, alongside the construction of the dedicated academic infrastructure required for the planned commencement of academic activities. Recruitment for 103 Posts to be Undertaken

Taking note of the Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) request and the urgency involved, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has granted its approval. The Ministry has further suggested that the recruitment for these 103 posts be carried out in a phased manner, aligned with the academic requirements identified by the Union Territory (UT) administration, starting from the 2027-28 academic session. The UT administration will also ensure that these posts are filled on a regular basis in accordance with the approved recruitment rules, and that the medical college transitions to its own dedicated infrastructure once the proposed facilities are completed.

LG Expresses Gratitude

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena thanked JP Nadda for acceding to the request, noting that the operationalization of a medical college in Leh marks a significant milestone for Ladakh and fulfills a long-standing demand of its people. He expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and Union Minister JP Nadda for their support toward medical education in Ladakh. Saxena stated that this approval will enable the administration to begin the process of gradually building an academic team tailored to specific educational needs. He emphasized that the objective is to provide the youth of Ladakh with greater access to quality medical education, while simultaneously strengthening the region's healthcare system.

Medical Education Now Accessible Closer to Home

The establishment of a medical college in Leh will reduce the dependence of students from Ladakh on other regions for their medical studies. It is also expected to help increase the availability of locally trained doctors. Given Ladakh’s unique geographical conditions, this medical college is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the region.
