Akola : Swords in hand, rhythmic Garba steps and the valour of Rajmata Jijau as an inspiration, women in Akola showcased a distinctive blend of cultural tradition, courage and self-confidence through the ‘Mata to Jijamata’ initiative organised by Vishwa Mangalya Sabha , Akola Mahanagar, during Navratri .

The initiative featured sword Garba performances at four venues across the city between Oct 14 and 17, highlighting women’s strength and the legacy of India’s martial and cultural traditions. Sonia Taral , a key representative of Vishwa Mangalya Sabha, said that through synchronised Garba movements with swords, the participants aimed to convey a message of fearlessness, self-respect and empowerment.

The performances began on Oct 14 with an inaugural session in front of the Devi idol installed by Nana Ujawane. The programme continued on Oct 15 at the VHB Colony ground, followed by a performance at Sarva Shakhiya Brahman Garba Mahotsav on Oct 16. The final scheduled presentation took place on Oct 17 at the Garba Mahotsav organised at Mehrabanu College .

One of the major attractions was an elderly participant, Shraddha Mokashi, who rode a Bullet, demonstrating her enthusiasm and confidence. The garba challenged age-related stereotypes and encouraged women to remain active and self-reliant. The concept drew inspiration from Goddess Durga , whose weapons represent strength and the fight against evil.

The organisers also sought to encourage younger generations, particularly Gen Z, to look beyond modern lifestyles and remain connected to tradition.
