India enjoyed a packed and medal-heavy day at the Asian Games, with shooting, boxing, athletics and volleyball providing some of the biggest moments of the campaign.

The biggest breakthrough came in the shooting range, where Neeru Dhanda won India’s first-ever individual women’s trap gold at the Asian Games. Neeru finished with 28/30 hits, holding her nerve in the final series to top the standings. Her gold was also India’s first individual gold at the 2026 Games and ended a 48-year wait for a Trap gold, dating back to Randhir Singh’s men’s individual triumph in 1978. The women’s trap team of Neeru, Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer also secured silver.

Boxing produced two more finalists for India. Parveen Hooda defeated China’s Li Shu 5-0 in the women’s 65kg semifinal to book her place in the final, while Ankush Panghal stunned reigning world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev with a 4-1 split decision in the men’s 80kg semifinal. India also added a bronze through Narender Berwal, who lost 0-5 to Kazakhstan’s Oralbay Aibek in the men’s +90kg semifinal; it will only be counted after the final.

Athletics brought the curtain down on its 2026 Asian Games programme with 24 medals for India: one gold, nine silver and 14 bronze. The women’s 4x400m relay team of Prachi Choudhary, Vithya Ramraj, Poovamma Raju and Kiran Pahal delivered the highlight, winning gold in 3:29.69. Gulveer Singh added another bronze to his collection in the men’s 5000m, while Pooja Singh won bronze in the women’s high jump. India also secured bronze in the mixed 4x100m relay with a national record of 41.06s, as well as in the men’s 4x400m relay.

On the volleyball court, India produced one of the day’s biggest comebacks. After losing the first two sets to Qatar, India fought back to win the next three, taking the deciding set 24-22. The 3-2 victory gave India a perfect 3/3 record in the group stage and sent them into the quarterfinals as group toppers.

There was also progress in tennis, with Sumit Nagal and Dhakshineshwar Suresh advancing to the men’s singles Round of 16 after straight-set victories. Nagal beat South Korea’s Seongchan Hong 6-4, 6-0, while Suresh defeated Indonesia’s Gunawan Trismwantara 7-5, 7-6. The mixed doubles pair of Ankita Raina and Balaji Narayanaswamy, however, exited after a 4-6, 4-6 defeat to Hong Kong’s Eudice Chong and Kairan Thompson.

In archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Neeraj Chauhan reached the men’s recurve quarterfinals. Neeraj produced a notable 6-4 victory over South Korea’s three-time Olympic medallist Kim Je Deok.

India’s women’s squash team remained unbeaten in Pool C after sweeping Iran 3-0, while Joga Purty set a new national record of 7.28 seconds in women’s speed climbing to reach the last 16. In canoeing, Pallavi Jagtap, Rina Sen, Hitesh Ahlawat and Pradhyumna Singh Rathod all advanced to their respective semifinals.

The day also saw exits in surfing, cycling and kurash, with Kishore Kumar Anbarasu bowing out in the men’s shortboard quarterfinals, India’s cycling sprint teams missing out on the medal rounds, and Vipin Kumar exiting the men’s -66kg kurash competition.

With athletics now complete, the focus turns to the remaining medal events, with India’s boxing finalists, archers and athletes in other disciplines continuing the campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.
