Government of India has taken a very important and humanitarian step to speed up the process of identification of missing persons after the devastating floods in Nepal on 26 August 2026. The Ministry of Home Affairs has made available specialized facilities of government and accredited forensic laboratories across the country for DNA profiling of next of kin of missing persons residing in India, so that bodies found in Nepal can be quickly identified.

Under this special scheme, first-degree biological relatives such as father, mother, son, daughter or siblings can donate their samples. Autosomal STR DNA profile will be prepared with the help of this biological sample, which is prepared according to specific technical standards issued by Nepal Police. Services of Central Forensic Science Laboratories, State Forensic Science Laboratories, National Forensic Science University and NABL-accredited laboratories can be availed for providing samples in India.

After the completion of the process, the prepared DNA profile has to be sent to the official email id dnacodis@nepalpolice.gov.np, so that the Nepal Police can match it with the data of the unidentified bodies found there. A copy of the DNA profile should also be sent to the email address of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu at eoikathmandufloodsupport@gmail.com for the purpose of maintaining simplicity and coordination in the entire process.
