Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has been issued an official reprimand following his dismissal in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against India at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. Jayasuriya came in to bat at No. 3 as a nightwatcher and was dismissed lbw by Manav Suthar off the final ball of Day 2.

While returning to the pavilion, Jayasuriya struck the boundary wedges with his bat and the broadcast later showed him throwing his gloves in the dressing room. He was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

One demerit point has also been added to his disciplinary record, and it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

There was no need for a formal hearing as Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the ICC Elite Panel Match Referee, Andy Pycroft. The on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge.

Jaiswal, Fernando also penalised

As a result, Jayasuriya became the third player in the ongoing Colombo Test to be sanctioned by the ICC, following Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando, who were penalised for an altercation on day 1 of the match.

The incident took place in the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batter walked towards the Sri Lankan pacer and the pair exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. Jaiswal then leant forward, resulting in the two players making some physical contact.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka finished Day 3 on 265/8, trailing by 238 runs in the first innings as rain once again brought an early end to the day’s play.
