To control air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued stringent new rules on registration of light goods vehicles (LGVs). Under these new rules, registration of new commercial goods vehicles running on petrol, diesel and CNG in Delhi-NCR will be stopped in a phased manner and only electric vehicles will be allowed. Here are the details of CAQM's decision.

**Ban on N1 category vehicles**
**Applicable in Delhi:** From January 1, 2027, no new CNG, diesel or petrol goods vehicle weighing less than 3,500 kg (N1 category) will be registered in Delhi.
**Applicable in major districts of NCR:** This rule will also be applicable in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) from July 1, 2027.

**Ban on N2 category vehicles**

A timeline for a phased ban has also been set for medium-sized goods vehicles (N2 category). These are vehicles weighing between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. Registration of new N2 category vehicles running on CNG, petrol or diesel will also be stopped.

**Delhi:** From January 1, 2028, only electric N2 vehicles will be registered in Delhi.
**Major districts of NCR:** This will be applicable in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Noida from July 1, 2028.
**Rest of NCR:** This restriction will be fully implemented in the entire NCR region from January 1, 2029.

***Why was this decision taken?**

CAQM President Rajesh Verma said that vehicular emissions are a major contributor to PM2.5 levels in Delhi-NCR. Small and medium goods vehicles (LGVs) in particular are major sources of pollution; Therefore, it is important to convert them to electric vehicles as soon as possible. Strict rules for stone crushing units
Regulations for stone crushing units have been tightened to prevent dust pollution.
It is mandatory for all stone crushing units to follow the 2023 guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Measures like CCTV video surveillance, PM2.5/PM10 sensors and facility for washing wheels of vehicles have been made mandatory for continuous monitoring of dust.

₹3.25 crore approved for research and technology
CAQM has approved funding worth ₹3.25 crore for four research and development (R&D) projects aimed at finding new ways to tackle pollution. These projects will focus on areas like estimating road dust, automated cleaning technology, impact of pollution on high-rise buildings and incidents of stubble burning.
