The cricket world was in shock after Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets in the first Test. This was just their second win over the Aussies in the Test format. The visiting side batted and bowled well during the course of the game and achieved the win on the fourth day.

Former batter Mark Waugh said that the loss on Sunday was one of the biggest upsets he has seen. Waugh also called West Indies’ win over the Aussies at the Gabba a few years ago an upset as well. The 61-year-old then went on to say that considering the visitors were without two of their best pacers, this loss was a bigger shock.

Cameron Green and Alex Carey came out to bat on Sunday, and the wicketkeeper was out for 30 to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The 28-year-old ran through the lower order as he got the wickets of Beau Webster for five runs, and also dismissed Pat Cummins for eight runs.

Taskin Ahmed then got the wicket of Mitchell Starc for 18 runs, which came off 34 balls. In the middle of all this, Green completed his third Test ton and was out for 104 to Hasan Mahmud as the bowler got his third wicket of the innings. The batter scored his runs off 201 balls with just four fours and a six. Miraz finished with figures of 5/66 from 33.1 overs.

Ricky Ponting opines on Australia’s defeat

Former skipper Ricky Ponting spoke to Channel 7, and he wasn’t happy with the loss on Sunday. The 51-year-old was heard saying, “I am the last one to advocate for changes as a captain or as a player and always wanted to keep the team together. I had to put my view forward before I came out and said that someone has to be left out.”

Punjab Kings coach then added, “But there has been enough evidence for me coming here to suggest that they weren’t going to lose anything, or much at all, by starting the regeneration by bringing in another opener, or by bringing in someone at No. 3. And I think if they lose here, then that has to happen.”

The second game of the series will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay starting 22nd August. It is a key game for the home team with several players likely to take the field in a bid to keep their spot in the squad safe.
