Mumbai: Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the age of India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, stating that such debates are irrelevant given the youngster’s extraordinary talent and performances on the field.
Sooryavanshi, who has rapidly risen through the ranks with remarkable consistency and confidence, continues to attract global attention not just for his cricketing ability but also for questions about his age. While he is officially listed as 15, speculation persists in cricketing circles outside India.
Lee acknowledged that doubts about Sooryavanshi’s age remain a frequent talking point internationally. According to the former pacer, many observers abroad continue to question whether the young batter is indeed as young as claimed.
However, Lee dismissed the significance of such speculation, emphasising that performance should remain the primary focus. He noted that whether the player is 15, 17 or 18 makes little difference if he is capable of excelling at the highest level.
The Australian great described Sooryavanshi as an “incredible” talent and one of the most exciting discoveries for Indian cricket in recent times. He added that the youngster’s achievements at such an early stage indicate a promising future filled with greater milestones.
Sooryavanshi has already made a strong impression with his performances in the Indian Premier League, where he has taken on some of the best bowlers in the world with remarkable ease. His aggressive stroke play and ability to dominate high-quality pace attacks have drawn widespread admiration.
Lee specifically highlighted one of Sooryavanshi’s standout innings, where the youngster scored 97 runs against a formidable bowling attack that included Australian pacers. The knock showcased his fearlessness, technique and ability to execute attacking shots under pressure.
The former fast bowler pointed out that Sooryavanshi’s strength lies not just in his power-hitting but also in his ability to play “proper cricketing shots,” underlining his all-round batting capability.
While praising his talent, Lee also cautioned against placing excessive expectations on the young cricketer. He stressed the importance of allowing Sooryavanshi to develop naturally without being burdened by external pressure.
According to Lee, the biggest challenge for the youngster will not be his batting ability but his mental approach as he navigates the demands of international cricket at a very young age. He advised that maintaining balance and ensuring he continues to enjoy the game will be crucial for long-term success.
Offering insight into how he would approach bowling to a player like Sooryavanshi, Lee said he relished contests against aggressive batters, particularly those strong on the hook and pull shots.
He explained that such match-ups create an engaging battle between bat and ball, and he would not hesitate to test the youngster with short-pitched deliveries. Even if the batter responded with attacking strokes, Lee maintained that it would not deter him from continuing the challenge.
Brett Lee’s remarks reinforce the growing global recognition of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s talent, while also putting into perspective the ongoing debate about his age. As the young cricketer continues to shine on the international stage, the focus is increasingly shifting from speculation to performance.
With guidance from experienced voices and careful management of expectations, Sooryavanshi appears well-positioned to build a successful career and emerge as a key figure in Indian cricket in the years to come.
