The government of Subhendu Adhikari has already taken several steps to revamp the tourism of the state. In particular, several plans have been taken to showcase the best Durga Puja of Bengal on the world stage. In the meantime, a new feather is going to be added to the tourism map of West Burdwan. The state government has taken the initiative to develop an eco-tourism park and water sports hub centered around the Durgapur Barrage. It is reported that the tourism department has already given instructions to the District Magistrate to look into this matter. It has been said that the possible aspects of the project will be looked into.
It is learnt that on August 3, the Tourism Department sent a letter to the concerned District Magistrate in this regard. It has been said that a report should be submitted soon after examining the feasibility of the project from the tourism perspective. If all the information in the report is correct, a complete project proposal (DPR) should be prepared and sent to the department in accordance with the government guidelines. It is reported that initiatives are being taken at the administrative level in this regard after the guidelines are issued. If the project is implemented, various water sports including boating, kayaking, paddle boats, jet skis can be created by utilizing the beautiful natural environment of Durgapur Barrage. Along with this, an environment-friendly eco-tourism park can be developed, which will become a new attraction for tourists.
In this context, Durgapur East MLA Chandrashekhar Banerjee said, “We had applied to the government for an eco-tourism park. The application has been responded to. A report has also been submitted on the matter.” According to the MLA, if such a project is implemented, not only will employment be created for the people of the area, but people of Durgapur and surrounding areas will also be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
It is worth mentioning that a few days ago, the state’s Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh announced plans to reorganize the Sundarbans. He said that the potential of the Sundarbans tourism industry will be developed based on the mangroves of the Sundarbans. The state government is giving special importance to the tourism industry for the economic upliftment of the people of the Sundarbans. Keeping that in mind, the tourism industry has been given importance for the development of the blue-carbon economy in the Sundarbans through eco-friendly tourism. On Mangrove Day, the Tourism Minister said that Darjeeling was earlier mentioned as ‘One State, One Destination’. Now the Sundarbans is going to be the second address of the global destination.
