Cricket updates: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally made its position clear on the speculations about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma’s retirement from ODI cricket. Board Secretary Devjit Saikia has clearly said that the third ODI played against England at Lord’s will not be Rohit’s last international match. He said that Rohit is currently a part of the Indian team’s plans and will continue to play for the country in future also. Talking to PTI, Saikia said that for the last few days, many types of news are coming out regarding the future of Rohit Sharma, but there is no truth in them. He clearly said that there has been no discussion at the board level regarding Rohit’s retirement and Sunday’s match is not the last match of his career.
Discussions intensified after the report
In fact, the Indian Express report had claimed that Lord’s ODI against England could be Rohit Sharma’s last international match. The report also said that the selectors have indicated to him that he will not be included in the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, after the latest statement of BCCI, these speculations have come to an end.
Bad form became reason for discussion
Rohit Sharma could not play big innings in the first two ODI matches on the England tour. He scored 11 runs in the first match and 26 runs in the second match. After this performance, discussions regarding his future intensified. It was also said that the selectors now want to give more opportunities to young players.
The issue of giving opportunities to young players also came up.
Some reports had claimed that keeping in mind the coming years, the selection committee is preparing to give more opportunities to young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal in the ODI team. However, no official announcement has been made by the board in this regard.
Have already said goodbye to two formats
Rohit Sharma has already retired from T20 International and Test cricket. In such a situation, it was believed that he might soon say goodbye to ODI cricket. But the latest statement of BCCI has made it clear that no such decision has been taken at present. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India traveled to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. After this, the team also won big titles like 2024 T-20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy. In such a situation, the board has completely rejected all the speculations arising about his future.
