During his visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartfelt moment with former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh. He gifted Waugh a photograph from their initial meeting over twenty years ago when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
This touching gesture marked the conclusion of PM Modi's three-day trip to Australia before heading to New Zealand. The event at the MCG highlighted the strong sporting relationship between India and Australia, with notable attendees including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, and former Australian women's cricketer Lisa Sthalekar.
The photograph from Modi's time as Gujarat Chief Minister sparked a warm conversation with Waugh, emphasizing the enduring personal and sporting ties between the two nations. During this visit, PM Modi and Albanese unveiled the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, designed to enhance cooperation in athlete development, sports science, coaching, sports technology, and infrastructure.
In his address, PM Modi expressed the significance of the MCG to Indians, stating, "When Indians visit the MCG, they think of the excitement of an India-Australia cricket match and recognize that cricket is more than just a sport; it is a shared passion. Today, we celebrate our friendship without any pressure, only joy." He emphasized that sports serve as a vital link in the bilateral relationship, stating, "It brings me immense pleasure to launch the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap with Prime Minister Albanese, which will enhance cooperation not only in cricket but across various sports."
PM Modi further mentioned that both countries would collaborate in sports training, science, and technology, extending partnerships beyond the field. He highlighted India's Khelo India initiative and expressed optimism about India's preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, alongside Brisbane's hosting of the 2032 Olympics, which would open new avenues for collaboration.
The visit to the MCG also underscored the expanding cricketing partnership between India and Australia. This comes ahead of the inaugural match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season, set to take place at Chennai's M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, marking the first BBL match held outside Australia.
Before wrapping up his visit to Australia, PM Modi engaged with children participating in exhibition matches of cricket, kabaddi, and Australian rules football, further solidifying the people-to-people and sporting connections that are integral to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
