Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man from Northern California in connection with a tragic shooting at a public library that resulted in two fatalities. The suspect, identified as Bradley Scott Sayer from Chico, was taken into custody on Monday evening following the incident at the Butte County Library's Chico branch. This event has left the local community in shock and prompted a significant law enforcement response.
Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge reported that officers arrived shortly after 5 PM on Monday after receiving a 911 call from the library, during which gunshots and screams were audible. As law enforcement entered the building, Sayer attempted to escape through the back but was captured by officers stationed outside. Aldridge described the event as deeply saddening and traumatic for many in the community during a press briefing.
Sayer has been booked into the Butte County Jail on two counts of murder. Investigators have indicated that there is no evidence suggesting he had any prior connection to the victims, whose identities have not yet been disclosed. A dispatcher from the Chico Police Department mentioned on Tuesday that it remains unclear if Sayer has legal counsel, as a search of Butte County court records did not reveal any information about him.
Additionally, a child sustained a minor injury during the shooting and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that Sayer acted independently, and both the Butte County Sheriff's Office and the FBI are involved in the ongoing investigation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, streets surrounding the library were temporarily closed, and a family reunification center was set up for those who were inside the building at the time. All branches of the Butte County library were closed on Tuesday. Butte County expressed its "deepest condolences" to all affected, including the victims, their families, library staff, and others impacted by this tragic event. Authorities have yet to provide further information regarding a potential motive as the investigation continues.
