Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, is reportedly showing signs of improvement and could be released from hospital in the near future. The update comes days after Messi became emotional following Argentina’s World Cup win over Algeria, later revealing he had been dealing with personal difficulties away from football. According to Argentine outlet Paparazzi, Jorge’s condition has improved in recent days, offering some relief to the Messi family after months of concern over his health.
Lionel Messi’s emotional World Cup moment brought Jorge Messi’s health battle into focusQuestions about Messi’s tears first emerged after Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City. The 38-year-old scored his first World Cup hat-trick but appeared emotional after the match.
Speaking to reporters, Messi explained that his feelings had nothing to do with football.
“No, honestly it’s something completely unrelated to sports. It’s been a few difficult days, complicated,” he said.
A few hours later, Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann shared more details during an interview on Radio Mitre.
“This has to do with his father. His father is not in good health,” Feinmann said. “For quite some time now, several months, since last year. And this week there were some situations that slightly worsened his health, and Messi is going through this internal struggle. In other words, like any human being.”
The Messi family later confirmed that Jorge, 68, was dealing with a health issue but did not provide further medical details.
Jorge Messi reportedly improving as Lionel Messi continues World Cup record chaseReports in Argentina say Jorge suffered a medical episode at his home earlier this year and was hospitalized. He is believed to have undergone cardiovascular and neurological tests, although the family has not publicly disclosed a diagnosis.
The family’s statement also came after false claims about Jorge’s death spread in Argentina. One broadcaster later issued a public apology and stepped away from her role following the mistake.
Jorge has played a major role throughout his son’s career. Besides being Lionel Messi’s father, he has also managed many of the football star’s business affairs for years.
While dealing with concerns over his father’s health, Messi has continued to shine on the field. After scoring a hat-trick against Algeria, he netted twice in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria to take his World Cup goal tally to 18 and move ahead of Miroslav Klose’s previous tournament record.
Following the victory, Messi said: “I’m very happy with the win. It was a very important and hard-fought victory, which gives us peace of mind for what’s to come.”
