Cristiano Ronaldo has strongly defended Roberto Martinez, taking aim at critics whom he described as 'disrespectful' towards the Portugal head coach.

Ronaldo expressed his full backing for Martinez, highlighting the Spanish manager’s passion, dedication, and positive influence since taking over the national team. The Portuguese captain emphasised that Martinez’s commitment to Portugal and his results speak for themselves. Ahead of the Nations League final, Ronaldo questioned why there was still criticism of the coach and said such reactions reflected a lack of respect, adding that success cannot only be measured by trophies.

Before Portugal’s Nations League final victory over Spain, Ronaldo told O Jogo: “If a coach reaches the final, it is because he has done an excellent job. Questioning someone who has a spectacular record for Portugal confuses me, though I understand. If a coach reaches the final and is still questioned, imagine the others. There’s been a bit of a lack of respect here. Talking about other coaches makes no sense, but this coach has done an extraordinary job.”

He went on to add: “Even when you win, the debate continues, but that’s part of the chatter from people sitting at home sharing their opinions. What truly matters is that we are very happy with the coach’s work. Coming from another country, speaking our language, and singing our anthem with such passion — that’s what I value most. The rest doesn’t matter. The results have been very positive, whether we win or not. There will always be debate, but for me, it makes no sense at all.”

Ronaldo and Martinez have built a strong professional bond, often publicly supporting one another. Despite Ronaldo’s underwhelming performances that affected Portugal’s 2024 European Championship campaign, Martinez continued to include and defend the veteran striker amid widespread calls for his exclusion. Portugal eventually exited the tournament after a penalty shootout defeat to France, prompting speculation about the futures of both Martinez and Ronaldo. However, they have both stayed on, now turning their attention to next year’s World Cup.

Portugal went on to secure their second Nations League title after defeating Spain on penalties in Sunday’s final. Ronaldo was among the scorers in regular time as the match ended 2-2. After a goalless extra period, it came down to spot-kicks, where goalkeeper Diogo Costa denied Alvaro Morata before Ruben Neves sealed victory with the decisive penalty.
