Harry Maguire has reportedly been offered to a major European club barely a month after signing a new contract with Manchester United.
The England defender has experienced a rollercoaster seven years at Old Trafford. Having arrived as the world’s most expensive defender, he has gone from being captain to losing his place and then working his way back into a key role for the team.
Maguire believed his recent performances for United were strong enough to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad this summer, but he openly expressed disappointment when Thomas Tuchel decided to leave him out.
Even after agreeing to a new deal with the Red Devils in April, reports suggest that Maguire could still be on the move in the upcoming transfer window.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan have been ‘offered’ the 31-year-old. The report does not clarify whether the proposal came directly from Manchester United or from Maguire’s representatives.
It appears more plausible that his representatives made the approach, as it would seem unlikely that United would renew his contract without intending to keep him. However, the club may also have wanted to secure a transfer fee should he decide to leave.
From his agents’ perspective, there could be logic in seeking opportunities elsewhere, particularly since Maguire’s strong form at club level hasn’t been enough to earn him a World Cup call-up.
Nonetheless, Inter Milan are considered unlikely to pursue the offer. Reports indicate that Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet has been identified as their preferred choice to strengthen the defence, as the Serie A runners-up look to refresh their back line.
Meanwhile, some pundits believe Maguire still deserves a regular place in the United lineup and in the England squad. Former England manager Sam Allardyce recently spoke in support of the defender.
Allardyce said, “Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw should both be in the England squad based on their form and experience.
“Since Maguire returned to the Manchester United side, he’s been a key factor in restoring defensive stability, which has helped the team win more matches.
“There’s no question that Maguire remains one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in the country.”
Allardyce also argued that Maguire offers more to England than Dan Burn, having been an integral part of the Three Lions setup in previous tournaments.
Though Maguire will miss out on this summer’s World Cup, it remains to be seen whether he will stay at Old Trafford or make a move abroad before the new season begins.
