Instagram has introduced a new feature for its users called 'Instants,' designed to offer a real-time, instant photo-sharing experience similar to Snapchat. With this feature, users can share live moments with friends—without the need for filters or editing—while also benefiting from several special capabilities such as enhanced privacy, safety measures, and auto-deletion. Let's take a closer look...

The social media platform Instagram has unveiled a new feature for its users called 'Instants,' which bears a resemblance to Snapchat. The objective of this feature is to provide users with a seamless way to share photos instantly, free from excessive editing or filters. The feature began rolling out globally on May 13th. In today's digital landscape, young users are increasingly prioritizing real, private interactions over polished and "perfect" posts; it is in response to this shifting trend that Instagram has taken this initiative. The 'Instants' feature is specifically designed for those who wish to share fleeting, authentic, and unfiltered moments with their friends.

How Will Instagram Insta Work, and What Makes It Unique?

Instagram's new 'Instants' feature will appear within the app's DM—or inbox—section. Users simply need to tap on a small photo-stack icon located at the bottom right of the chat screen to launch the 'Instants' camera. From there, users can snap live photos and send them to their "Close Friends" list or mutual followers. A key highlight of this feature is that these photos automatically disappear once they have been viewed. Instagram has intentionally omitted filters and extensive editing options from this feature to ensure that the photos appear as natural and authentic as possible. Furthermore, users will not be able to upload photos from their existing camera roll or gallery.

What Features Are Included?

Alongside 'Instants,' Instagram has also introduced several new tools...

Among these, the 'Archive' feature stands out as particularly noteworthy; it privately saves the 'Instants' shared by a user for up to one year, accessible only to that specific user.

The 'Recap' feature transforms past 'Instants' into a curated collection, which can subsequently be reshared as an Instagram Story. Additionally, an "Undo" button has been provided, allowing users to retract an accidentally sent "Instant" before the recipient has a chance to view it.

If a user wishes to take a temporary break from this feature, a "Snooze" option is also available.

Meta is currently testing a separate "Instants" app in Spain and Italy, which will enable users to share photos rapidly by opening the camera directly.

What Security Measures Has Instagram Implemented?

Instagram has also implemented several specific measures regarding security and privacy. According to the company, all of Instagram's existing safety features—including options such as Mute, Block, and Restrict—will apply to "Instants." Users will only be able to share "Instants" with their "Close Friends" or mutual followers. Additional safeguards have also been added to prevent screenshots and screen recordings. Protections for Teen Accounts and the Family Centre will also remain active with this feature, allowing parents to monitor their children's activity. For teenagers, notifications will be automatically muted between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
