Heavy rain is set to hammer the UK on Thursday, with temperatures plunging below the seasonal average. The chilly and rainy weather looks set to continue with the Met Office noting that it will feel "more like early spring over the next couple of days, as a northerly airflow keeps us in a notably cool airmass".
This airmass will bring "below average temperatures along with brisk winds at times, all adding to the chill". Met Office weather maps indicate that tomorrow (May 14), some 24 counties across the country will be battered by heavy rain. The Met Office weather forecast for Thursday reads: "Another day of sunshine and showers, with the showers heavy and thundery in places. A more prolonged spell of rain possible for a time in the west. Feeling cool."
Weather maps from the agency at 11.45am tomorrow indicate that large areas of the country will be drenched by rain.
The maps show that western parts of the UK will see the brunt of the miserable weather. Showers are also scattered across central and eastern areas.
Almost the entirety of the South West will receive a drenching, whilst Kent and Essex will also see heavy rain showers.
Weather maps show that south, mid and west Wales are all covered in rain, with scattered rain showers also hitting the Midlands.
Glasgow and its surrounding areas will see the worst of the weather in Scotland. Argyll and Bute will also be heavily affected.
By 3.45pm tomorrow, a heavy band of rain will have moved to cover large areas of the north West, as well as Yorkshire and the Humber. This will also blanket west and east Sussex. The worst hit areas will see up to 8mm of rain, 0.5mm-2mm is forecast to be more widespread.
The rain will have eased in some areas of Wales and in Cornwall. However, Devon will continue to be battered by rain
Aidan McGivern, Senior Weather Presenter at the Met Office, said: "Further showers and more frequent showers for the south and southwest compared with Wednesday."
He added there could even be "snow over the peaks in Scotland" and "parts of central England will see the driest spells".
"Temperatures will be a degree or so lower in some spots compared with Wednesday and take in account for the wind, it's going to feel significantly cooler than that," said Mr McGivern.
