Golden Child Syndrome: In today’s time, parenting has become not only the responsibility of raising children but also giving the right direction to their mental development. Many times, parents unknowingly start giving excessive importance to one child, while ignoring the feelings of other children. This imbalance can gradually give rise to a mental condition like ‘Golden Child Syndrome’.
This condition not only affects the personality of the child but also affects the relationships of the entire family. A child who constantly receives excessive praise, concessions and special treatment may become a victim of emotional and social imbalance in the future. Let us understand what this syndrome is and what mistakes parents should avoid.
Golden child syndrome is a condition when one child in the family is considered “perfect” or “special” and extraordinary expectations are placed on him/her. He is always proven right and his mistakes are ignored. Gradually the child begins to believe that he is always right and does not need any criticism.
Many times, parents start giving more importance to one of their children because of his studies, behavior or likes and dislikes. They unconsciously start comparing him with other children. Constant praise and special treatment can create overconfidence in the child, while other children may develop an inferiority complex.
A child affected by Golden Child Syndrome gradually stops accepting criticism. He thinks he is right about everything. Such children may face problems like relationship problems, anger issues and lack of social skills in the future. Jealousy and distance may also increase in the family.
Every child’s needs and temperament are different, but it is important to maintain a balance of love and attention. Parents should give equal importance to all children, correct their mistakes and encourage them without comparison. This makes children self-reliant and mentally strong.
