A former Premier League midfielder appeared to suffer a horrific leg break in a sickening tackle during an amateur match, with an ambulance rushed onto the pitch in distressing scenes. Stephen Ireland, the ex-Manchester City player, was lining up for Wythenshawe Vets in a cup final against South Liverpool Vets on Sunday. The match, which featured several former top-flight stars, was brought to a sudden halt after a tackle on Ireland so severe that an ambulance was required on the pitch to attend to the stricken player.

Harrowing footage of the challenge and its aftermath was shared across social media, capturing a defender launching into a heavy challenge on Ireland with a sickening crack that resembled a gunshot, leaving the midfielder crumpled on the ground. The clip then shows an ambulance driving onto the pitch as distraught team-mates, friends and family gathered around Ireland while he received urgent medical attention.

Ireland, who made 176 appearances for City, has been a pivotal figure in the star-laden side's rise to prominence. The full extent of his injuries remains unclear at this stage.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance and the fixture was abandoned, with both clubs and the league set to determine how to proceed.

Ireland and his wife, Jess, are keeping the club informed, with further updates expected when the time is right.

A statement from Wythenshawe Vets read: "Stephen is overwhelmed and incredibly grateful for the support following today's incident in the Veterans Final.

His wife Jess shared: "Thank you to everyone at today's game who helped in any way. It was a really upsetting and shocking moment, but the care and unity shown made a huge difference.

"We are so grateful not only to the Wythenshawe FC fans, but also to South Liverpool Vets and everyone at Warrington Rylands: you were all outstanding.

"A special thank you to the paramedics and ambulance team from Warrington Hospital for their swift and professional care."

"In true Stephen spirit: Superman will return. We're all behind you, Stephen. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery."

Wythenshawe Vets have been amongst the most compelling stories of the season, with former Premier League stars lacing up their boots once more to compete in Sunday league football.

The likes of Papiss Cisse, Marc Albrighton, Danny Drinkwater, Maynor Figueroa, Joleon Lescott, Nedum Onuoha, Emile Heskey and Antonio Valencia have all featured for the team this season.

Sitting top of the Cheshire Veterans Football League Premier Division, Wythenshawe have triumphed in all 10 of their league fixtures with a goal difference of 77. They also lifted the Manchester FA Veterans Cup, defeating East Manchester 9-2 last month.
