Keir Starmer has been torn apart on TalkTV as the controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador has returned to the spotlight. A new report by The Guardian has claimed that Mandelson failed the vetting process when it came to his appointment and the Foreign Office overruled the decision.
The question has now been raised once again whether the prime minister misled MPs over Mandelson's appointment. The government has insisted the full vetting process was followed, but not everyone is convinced. TalkTV host Kevin Sullivan said: "There's two responses that we can have to that. Either Keir Starmer is lying and he knew that the Foreign Office had overruled the vetting failure by Mandelson, or he didn't know.
"My feeling is, because this was a Morgan McSweeney project to get Mandelson in as our man in Washington. It's well known that Starmer wasn't thrilled about the idea, he doesn't like Mandelson much, but he went along with it.
"I had a feeling that when Starmer said the full vetting process was applied, I think he genuinely thought that was the case."
O'Sullivan described it as "extraordinary" that the Foreign Office may have overruled the decision, adding: "This is a scandal on a whole new level and it does plunge the prime minister into massive trouble."
Ben Habib, leader of Advance UK, believes Starmer already lied about the situation because he claimed there was "nothing untoward" about Mandelson "that he was aware of".
Habib continued: "We already know that senior members of the Cabinet Office had advised the prime minister that Mandelson's track record and his relationship with Epstein was so bad that actually, there was serious risk of reputational damage to the prime minister.
"But if the prime minister didn't know about the fact that Mandelson failed vetting, then he's guilty of supreme incompetence!
"It's not like Mandelson was being appointed as the tea boy in Number 10. He was being appointed to be ambassador for the United Kingdom to the United States of America. It is a hugely important position."
He added: "It is the most important position in the Foreign Office. I think this report came out in January or February in 2025, so it's been over a year that it's been in the possession of the Foreign Office.
"It should have been communicated to the prime minister. If it wasn't communicated back then, why wasn't it made known to him after Mandelson was kicked out of office. There is a significant failure of governance again, but I think Starmer is a liar!"
