The Grosvenor Estate has said that securing the long-term future of the historic Chester Grosvenor Hotel is now its "priority" after the shock announcement that the famous hotel will close in September and undergo refurbishment. In a statement, the company, which is the family firm of one of the country's wealthiest property owners, the Duke of Westminster, said it was "sorry to acknowledge" the decision by Bespoke Hotels.

It said it was also sorry "for the impact this will have on those whose roles may be affected". Grosvenor added: "Our priority now is to ensure the long-term future of the hotel given its importance to Chester. As an organisation steeped in the history of city and that is deeply committed to its long-term success, we are developing plans for a major refurbishment supported by significant investment and the appointment of a new operator.

"The refurbishment will protect the future of Cheshire's only five-star large hotel, strengthening Chester's tourism and hospitality economy."

Bespoke Hotels, which presently runs the Grade II hotel, told Cheshire Live on Thursday afternoon that it will close the hotel on September 30. The decision follows the discovery of potentially unsafe concrete above the function suites of the building, which dates from 1865.

The Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, is a close friend of Prince William and has many ties to the Royal Family, including serving as a godfather to both William's eldest son, 12-year-old Prince George and Prince Harry's son, Prince Archie.

After a few years of working for various estate management companies, Hugh succeeded his father and became the 7th Duke of Westminster when the former Duke sadly died from a heart attack at the age of 64.

At the time of his succession, he inherited an estimated wealth of £9 billion and gained several new estates. It is estimated that his net worth has now grown to £10billion.

He is also known by the titles of Marquess of Westminster, Earl Grosvenor, Viscount Belgrave and Baron Grosvenor. Hugh also became the head of The Grosvenor Group upon his father's death and, as a result, owns several huge areas of London - including half of Mayfair and most of Belgravia - as well as over 1,500 buildings all across the world.

Hugh married Olivia Henson in June 2024, before welcoming their first child just a year later.

Their daughter, whom they named Lady Cosima Florence Grosvenor, was born in London on July 27, 2025.
