New Delhi. In West Bengal, the Election Commission and the TMC government of the state are at loggerheads over the issue of Special Intensive Verification of Voters (SIR). The Supreme Court had recently given many important orders in this matter. In its order given on February 24, the Supreme Court had ordered the Election Commission to accept the admit card of class 10th board examination also. It seemed that by submitting the 10th Board admit card, many people would get a chance to register their names in the voter list under SIR. Now the Supreme Court has given clarity regarding the validation of 10th admit card in SIR of West Bengal.

Senior lawyer DS Naidu had expressed doubts over this in the bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Jaimalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi. Naidu had asked the bench whether the 10th board admit card alone would be valid as an identity card? On which the CJI bench made it clear that if the admit card of class 10th board exam is given along with the pass certificate, then only it will be accepted by the Election Commission. The Election Commission will not accept the 10th board exam admit card alone. The court said that the admit card of 10th board is a supporting document. That is not the only identity card. Earlier, the Supreme Court had also said in its order that the documents which have been received before February 15, but have not been uploaded, should be handed over to the judicial authorities by 5 pm on February 25.

On the orders of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court has appointed 250 district judges and civil judges to investigate the claims and objections of 80 lakh voters. In such a situation, the Supreme Court has also said that it will take at least 80 days to verify everyone’s documents. For this reason, the Supreme Court has also asked to appoint judicial officers from the neighboring states of Jharkhand and Odisha to settle the claims and objections to SIR in West Bengal. Senior and junior judges from these two states having at least three years of experience can be deployed for SIR work.
