Leon Greenwood hopes his Olympic debut can inspire more people to turn from the athletics track to the bobsleigh track.

The 28-year-old from Batley finished seventh in the four-man bobsleigh at Milano Cortina 2026, way off the podium he wished he was on. After a consistent Olympic cycle that had seen Greenwood reach world, European and World Cup podiums alongside his teammates of Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence and Greg Cackett, it was not the results they were after but it was one he can look back on with pride.

And with a second fastest start on the track the entire Games, clocking just 4.78 seconds to cover roughly 50 metres, Greenwood now hopes it can encourage more sprinters to try their hand at the winter sport.

"I'm four years in, so I will definitely be back here," he said. "These guys have been to two or three Olympics so are oldies. But definitely for myself, I'd like to aim for the next Olympics.

"It just shows that there is so much depth in our programme. Hopefully now we can show with a top two start in the world, more people are going to get involved and we'll get some more fast guys into the programme."

Greenwood originally started off as a sprinter, with a best time of 11.10 seconds over 100m, but an ankle injury pushed him out of athletics and into the unexpected with bobsleigh. Now in a sport that heavily relies on his speed at the start, Greenwood has only soared after making the elite programme in 2022.

Set to make his Olympic debut in the four-man, his bow came earlier than intended after being subbed in for Lawrence in the final two heats of the two-man. He finished 12th in that event, and is now set to enjoy his summer off in Greece with his family.

The British bobsleigh quartet travel around the world together for the majority of the year, so it must be a nice reprieve from his brothers in the sled. But with ambitions to reach another Olympics in four years time, Greenwood is already excited for another taste of Olympic action alongside his teammates.

Or as Lawrence put it: "I'm super grateful to be on this journey with these three idiots."
