Sonpur Green Airport: The proposed green regional airport project at Sonpur in Saran district has now reached the important stage of implementation. Civil Aviation Department of Bihar Government has formally issued tender for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR). This is being considered a big step towards getting the project off the ground. Upon completion of construction, this airport can be included among the major and big airports of the country and will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

As per the timetable of the department, tender forms are available from 6 February 2026. A pre-tender meeting will be organized on February 14 at 3 pm in the departmental auditorium located in Patna, where technical and administrative information will be given to the interested agencies. The last date for submission of proposals is 27 February 2026, till 3 pm. Technical tenders will be opened on March 10, while technical presentation will take place on March 17 from 12 noon. The date of financial tender will be announced later. The entire process will be under two-envelope system, in which first the technical eligibility will be evaluated and then the financial bids of the eligible institutions will be opened.

Main features of the project

The most important feature of the project is the planned 4200 meter long runway. This length is considered suitable for the safe operation of large passenger and cargo aircraft. Apart from this, modern passenger terminal building, cargo terminal, storage area and necessary infrastructure facilities will be developed as per international standards. Fire fighting and disaster management systems, advanced air traffic control (ATC) systems and modern security and surveillance systems will also be part of the project. Keeping in mind the increasing number of passengers in future, possibilities of expansion will also be included in the plan.

Connectivity to major metros of the country will be easy

There is a plan to operate the proposed airport 24 hours, which will make movement of aircraft day and night possible. This will pave the way for Bihar to get direct connectivity with major metros of the country as well as international cities. This airport is proposed in the Dariyapur Chanwar area, north of the Sonpur-Chhapra four-lane national highway, west of the Gandak river, while the Sonpur-Bettiah road is located in the east. Construction of new parallel bridges is also in progress for better connectivity with Patna, which will ease the traffic between the capital and Sonpur.

Keep an eye on other international airports of Bihar

Currently, Patna’s Jaiprakash Narayan International Airport is facing challenges of expansion due to limited capacity and approximately 2050 meter long runway. At the same time, the runway length of the under construction Bihta airport is possible only up to 2500 meters. In such a situation, in view of the increasing population and number of passengers, the need for a big and modern airport was felt. Sonpur project is being seen as this long term solution.

This project is expected to give new impetus to economic activities in North Bihar. Hotels, transport, tourism and local business will get a boost and employment and investment opportunities will increase. Administrative approval for land acquisition has already been received and the construction work will be formally proceeded after the preparation of DPR.
